Job Purpose
The Safety and Risk Officer will be tasked with delivering occupational safety services throughout all clusters of the eThekwini Municipality. This role is essential in guaranteeing that the municipality complies with health and safety laws, policies, procedures, and standards.
The Senior Safety and Risk Officer will also be tasked with additional duties, such as guiding junior officers and engaging in the safety planning processes of the department.
Key Responsibilities
Safety And Risk Officer
- Monitor compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations, municipal safety standards, and policies.
- Stay updated on amendments to OHS legislation and best practices.
- Conduct independent investigations into workplace incidents, fatalities, and accidents.
- Assist the Manager (Safety and Risk) in collecting accident and incident statistics.
- Plan and conduct internal safety and risk audits in collaboration with cluster management.
- Conduct workplace risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
- Research and introduce new safety measures, work processes, and equipment.
- Ensure that municipal employees receive appropriate health and safety training.
Senior Safety And Risk Officer
- Mentor and assess new Safety and Risk Officers based on the Unit’s Skills Development Strategy.
- Participate in safety planning and consultations with line management.
- Conduct health and safety audits and risk assessments for all clusters.
- Coordinate Safety Department expenditure with the Manager.
- Prepare and submit monthly reports on health and safety services.
- Conduct external safety audits to ensure regulatory compliance.

- Computer literacy
