Key Responsibilities and Duties
As the Professional Nurse Specialty Maternity (Obstetrics and Gynaecology), your role will be multifaceted and vital to the smooth operation of the maternity unit. The primary duties will include:
- Provision of Specialized Nursing Care: You will be responsible for the coordination and delivery of optical, holistic specialized nursing care, adhering to professional and legal frameworks. Your expertise in obstetrics and gynaecology will ensure that all patients receive exceptional care during their time in the facility.
- Management and Supervision of Resources: Effectively manage and utilize nursing resources, while also overseeing the activities of support personnel to ensure optimal care for patients.
- Policy Formulation and Implementation: You will take part in the formulation and implementation of policies, practices, and procedures to enhance the quality of care, including the correct use of partograms and maternity guidelines. Your contributions will help ensure the department’s standards are maintained.
- Quality Control and Accreditation: One of your critical roles will be to monitor and control the quality of patient care and maintain the accreditation standards by ensuring compliance with relevant health policies. This includes the implementation of essential healthcare programs such as ESMOE, HBB, BANC, PMTCT, and BFHI.
- Health Promotion and Illness Prevention: You will also have the opportunity to participate in health promotion and illness prevention initiatives, advocating for better health practices and providing education to patients.
- Employee Performance Management: Another essential part of your role will involve assisting with Employee Performance Management Development System (EPMDS) and implementing the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to support staff development.
- Clinical Governance: You will play an integral role in adhering to clinical governance principles, ensuring that your practice promotes quality care and that standards are continuously met.
Requirements for the Position

- Educational Qualifications:
- A Degree or Diploma in General Nursing, with Midwifery.
- A post-basic qualification in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Science is essential.
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a General Nurse with Midwifery, along with a valid SANC receipt.
- Experience and Skills:
- Knowledge and experience in implementing public service acts, regulations, and policies.
- Demonstrated understanding of nursing legislation and ethical practices.
- Ability to perform clinical nursing practice in line with scope and standards.
- Effective communication skills, including report writing.
- Ability to plan, organize, and supervise nursing work effectively.
- Familiarity with the implementation of Batho Pele principles, patients’ rights charter, and code of conduct.
