Key Responsibilities

The Psychologist II will be responsible for a variety of key duties aimed at supporting Rhodes University students. The main objectives of the role include:

  1. Career Counselling Services:
    The core responsibility of this position is to provide comprehensive career counselling to students and prospective students. This involves helping students explore their career options, offering psychometric assessments, and providing guidance on career development.
  2. Managing the Career Centre:
    The incumbent will be tasked with running the Career Centre, ensuring its smooth operation. The Career Centre plays a critical role in connecting students with career opportunities, supporting them through their job search, and helping them develop the necessary skills to thrive in the professional world.
  3. Supervision and Training of Interns:
    As part of this role, the Psychologist II will assist in the supervision and training of intern psychologists. This will be done in collaboration with the Head of the Counselling Centre, contributing to the development of future professionals in the field of psychology.

Requirements

To be eligible for this role, applicants must meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Educational Qualifications: A Master’s degree in Psychology, specifically in the field of counselling psychology, is required.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience post-internship is essential. Experience in supervising interns will be an added advantage.
  • HPCSA Registration: The candidate must be actively registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a psychologist.
  • Relevant Experience: Experience in working with adolescents or young adults, especially in the areas of career guidance, counselling, educational work, and psychometric services, is required. Experience in working with secondary school learners and tertiary students will be beneficial.

Desirable Qualities:

  • The more diverse the candidate’s experience, the better. This includes experience in one-on-one counsellinggroup counselling, and educational interventions.
  • Supervisory experience and working with a diverse student population are highly advantageous.

Remuneration and Benefits

The successful candidate will receive an attractive compensation package:

  • Basic Salary: R464 758 per annum.
  • Cost to Company: Approximately R617 693 per annum.

In addition to this, the University offers various benefits, including contributions to the pension fund, medical aid, and other employee perks. This is a permanent position, but the University reserves the right to offer a fixed-term contract of no less than three years.
