Requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: A degree in Engineering (BEng / BSc Eng.) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Experience: At least six (6) years of post-qualification experience.
  • Registration: Compulsory registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • Driver’s License: A valid, unexpired driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Engineering Design and Analysis

  • Conduct final reviews, approvals, or audits of new engineering designs based on established principles and theories.
  • Coordinate design efforts across disciplines to ensure integration with current technologies.
  • Innovate new engineering services and management methods.

2. Operational Effectiveness

  • Oversee the execution of maintenance strategies, ensuring the provision of appropriate systems, structures, and resources.
  • Set and uphold maintenance standards, specifications, and service levels aligned with organizational goals.
  • Monitor efficiency to direct engineering services effectively towards achieving organizational objectives.

3. Governance

  • Allocate, control, and monitor resources efficiently, including compiling risk logs and managing significant risks.
  • Provide technical consulting services to minimize engineering risks.
  • Implement knowledge-sharing initiatives, such as secondments and short-term assignments, to support development plans and operational needs.
  • Ensure efficient exchange and protection of information to support knowledge management.

4. Financial and Human Resource Management

  • Ensure the availability and proper management of funds to meet the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) objectives.
  • Manage capital projects to align resources with organizational goals.
  • Lead and motivate human resources within the discipline to build a competent and efficient team.
  • Monitor and evaluate subordinates’ performance and take corrective actions to meet departmental objectives.

  • Educational Qualification: A degree in Civil Engineering (B.Eng or B.Sc. (Eng)).
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of post-qualification experience in water infrastructure, particularly in the design, construction, and safety of hydraulic structures and dams.
  • License: A valid, unexpired driver’s license is required.
  • Professional Registration: Compulsory registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Strong expertise in engineering design, analysis, and project management.
    • Comprehensive understanding of legal compliance, strategic leadership, and engineering standards.
    • Proficiency in dam design, analysis, and safety.
    • Experience with computer applications and software relevant to dam engineering, such as CAD, spreadsheets, and project planning tools.
    • Knowledge of dam safety regulations, hydrology, hydraulics, structural design, geology, and building materials.
    • Ability to manage contracts, address claims, and work independently.

Key Duties:

  • Conduct engineering designs, analyses, reviews, and approvals for dams and related structures.
  • Plan and manage engineering projects across their life cycle.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards and principles on all civil engineering projects.
  • Apply legal and contract management skills in project implementation.
  • Promote skills transfer and mentorship for candidate engineers.
  • Manage resources effectively to optimize utilization.
  • Undertake research and development initiatives.
  • Perform office administration, including budget planning.
