POST 23/39: STATE VETERINARIAN – AQUATIC ORGANISMS

Reference No: FIM05/2025
Salary: R896 436 per annum (All-inclusive remuneration package)
Centre: Cape Town (Marine Research Aquarium, Sea Point)

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science (NQF Level 7) or an equivalent qualification recognized by the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in veterinary services.
  • Compulsory registration with the SAVC.
  • In-depth knowledge of:
    • Aquatic Animal Health and aquaculture production systems
    • Disease management protocols
    • SAVC regulations and requirements
    • World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) standards
  • Strong project planning and management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to collect, evaluate and interpret data effectively.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee veterinary import and export controls for aquatic organisms.
  • Conduct biosecurity audits on all registered production farms.
  • Perform stock inspections on grow-out aquaculture farms, including sampling, analysis, and secure storage of specimens.
  • Provide veterinary support and oversight for the Department’s import control processes.
  • Support and contribute to ongoing aquatic animal health research initiatives.
  • Act as Biosecurity Coordinator and attending veterinarian for departmental aquaculture facilities.
  • Convene meetings of the Aquatic Animal Ethics Committee (AAEC) and screen research proposals before submission.
  • Review and update AAEC Standard Operating Procedures annually.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and review of aquatic animal health legislation, policies, guidelines, and programmes.
  • Participate in relevant aquatic animal health working groups.
  • Provide expert input for reviewing permit conditions and aligning them with domestic and international standards.
  • Oversee the National Residue Control Programme implementation.
  • Monitor and ensure the effectiveness of biosecurity protocols.
  • Compile and submit monthly sub-unit reports.
  • Develop and maintain veterinary and aquaculture health databases.
