Minimum Requirements
To qualify for the Medical Officer (Grade 1) post, applicants must meet the following:
- Matric Certificate (Grade 12)
- MBChB degree (or equivalent) – qualification as a Medical Practitioner
- Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
- Valid unendorsed Code B driver’s licence (Code 08)
🔔 No prior experience is required for Grade 1.
Required Skills and Knowledge
Applicants should possess:
- Sound clinical skills in General Medicine, with focus in:
- Primary Health Care (PHC)
- HIV & AIDS, TB Management, VMMC (Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision)
- Maternal and child health, including antenatal and postnatal care
- Emergency care and minor ailments
- IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses)
- Non-communicable diseases
- Understanding of:
- National Health Insurance (NHI)
- Batho Pele Principles
- Medical ethics
- Strong:
- Communication and leadership skills
- Mentorship and training capabilities
- Fluency in local languages is an advantage
- Diplomas in Family Medicine or HIV/AIDS will be advantageous
Key Responsibilities
Medical Officers will be responsible for delivering a wide scope of health services at PHC facilities, including:
Primary Health Services:
- Leading HAST (HIV/AIDS, STI, TB) programmes
- Managing Men’s Health and VMMC services
- Implementing comprehensive care packages per facility burden of disease
Maternal & Child Health:
- Providing antenatal and postnatal care
- Managing child health services, including IMCI protocols
- Ensuring proper use of APC 101 Clinical Guidelines
Clinical Governance & Quality:
- Maintaining accurate clinical documentation
- Ensuring adherence to the Essential Medicines List (EML)
- Participating in quality assurance assessments
- Managing and reporting adverse events
Medico-Legal & Emergency Duties:
- Responding to emergencies (including trauma, rape, and assault)
- Providing medical documentation and court testimony for SAPS
- Supporting rehabilitation services and referrals
Training & Mentorship:
- Mentoring nurses and junior staff
- Providing in-service clinical training
- Promoting professional development and adherence to guidelines
