Generic Requirements:
- Applications must be completed on the form prescribed by the National Commissioner, with all particulars affirmed under oath or solemn declaration as true and correct.
- Must be a South African citizen (documentary proof required).
- Age must be between 18 and 35 years as of the closing date (documentary proof required).
- Must undergo and pass a physical medical examination to be deemed physically, medically, and mentally fit.
- Must undergo and pass a psychological integrity assessment as per the National Commissioner’s standards.
- Must possess a Grade 12 certificate or equivalent (documentary proof required).
- Must be proficient in English and at least one other official South African language.
- Must be willing to take the oath of office.
- Must be prepared to undergo training as determined by the National Commissioner.
- No visible tattoos when wearing SAPS uniform.
- Must not be unfit to possess a firearm.
- No previous criminal convictions or pending criminal cases.
- No history of dismissal for serious misconduct related to dishonesty, violence, sexual harassment, or drug-related offenses.
- Must consent to provide buccal samples and fingerprints for criminal record verification.
- Must allow background and security vetting, including obtaining security clearance.
- Must be willing to serve anywhere in South Africa.

- Protect and secure the inhabitants of South Africa and their property.
- Uphold and enforce the law.
Additional Requirements:
Preference will be given to applicants who possess:
- A valid driver’s license for at least a light motor vehicle.
Qualifications (in order of preference):
- Relevant 3-year tertiary qualification (NQF Level 6 or higher) in Criminal Law, Policing, Forensic Investigation, or related fields.
- Other 3-year tertiary qualifications (NQF Level 6 or higher).
- Grade 12 certificate with minimum requirements for admission to a Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma, or Higher Certificate studies.
General Information:
- Applicants will undergo fitness, psychometric integrity, and medical assessments, and be interviewed during recruitment, selection, and enlistment.
- SAPS will verify all qualifications, driver’s licenses (if applicable), citizenship, and residential addresses.
- Security screening will include vetting, reference checks, social media screening, and fingerprint verification.
- Applicants previously dismissed from government employment due to misconduct are ineligible.
- Due to the physical demands of the Basic Police Development Learning Programme, applicants with chronic illnesses, physical impairments, or other health conditions that may disrupt training may be excluded.
- Failure to disclose health conditions may result in withdrawal from the programme.
- Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. If no communication is received within 3 months after the closing date, consider the application unsuccessful.
- Only one application per person is allowed; the system will not accept multiple submissions.
- SAPS reserves the right not to make any appointments despite applications received.
